Visit the Silver Lake Sand Dunes

Thirty minutes to the south of Ludington, you'll find the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. This area is known predominantly for its 2,000 acres of rolling sand hill formations. Stretching 1.5 miles wide and 3 miles long, the formation is still growing and moving, it is considered one of the largest deposits of living dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan. Most of this formation is part of the Silver Lake State Park and is open to the public, the beginning of April through October.

The dune area is divided into three sections. The Northern area of the dune is reserved for off-road vehicles where you can drive your vehicle and put it to the test. With all appropriate licenses and vehicle qualifications (please visit the Michigan department of Natural Resources for more details), you can have a chance to personally challenge these huge sand formations with your own off-road machine.

The center of the dune area is for hikers and provides access to both Lake Michigan and Silver Lake itself. The southern end is leased to Mac Woods Dune Rides a company that offers an easy way for families to enjoy the dunes close up.

Along with dunes, there are several great beaches available to visitors of Silver Lake as well. The Silver Lake campground beach is open to the public. This beach offers a great dune view along with great facilities such as picnic tables, a pavilion, and public restrooms.

Beach access is granted via some other great beaches as well. There is a pedestrian beach within the state park, and there is also Golden Township Park. Golden Township Park has a warm water channel that is perfect for young swimmers who are not quite ready to hit Lake Michigan. This beach also provides access to the Little Sable Point Lighthouse as well.
